I’m Jess, your wig wearing, champagne drinking, Bravo TV obsessed, side part and skinny jean wearing (they have never gone out of style in my opinion), telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia hair loss BFF.
Hello!
My name’s Kimberly and I’m the founder of the global topper and wig brand, Lusta Hair!
But…let me take you back a few steps. When I was 19 years old, I noticed my hair was falling
out. I was blow drying my hair after a shower and I gathered up all the strands…and nearly fell
to the floor. It was suddenly SO thin. I had lost half the volume I once had. Of course, this didn’t
happen overnight… It was a gradual process of many months. But this was the first time I had
really noticed it.
I ran straight to my mum, in tears. She took one look at me and immediately knew what was
going on. My mum had thinning hair most of her life, same with my grandma, so she wasn’t
shocked that this was happening to me as well.
My grandma, my mum and myself all have something called ‘Androgenic Alopecia’. It’s also
known as ‘female pattern baldness’. It’s a genetic condition which causes your hair to be super
thin and gradually fall out. This was a terrifying diagnosis for a 19 year old.
Over the next few years, most of my energy went towards ‘curing’ my hair loss. It started with
hair extensions. They gave me the extra volume and length I so desperately needed. But…after
a few years my hair became so thin that it couldn’t cover the wefts of the extensions. So, Plan A
failed.
Next, was Plan B, treatments. I started off with natural remedies. Rosemary oil, black seed oil,
egg, mayonnaise, this floury water mixture my trichologist gave me…I tried it all. Name a home
remedy and I guarantee you I’ve rubbed it onto my scalp. Along with this, I tried all the vitamins.
I had some blood tests done with my doctor, and I found I was low in iron. I took so many iron
rich supplements- but still, no hair growth.
Whilst I was still trying all the natural remedies, I also started some more expensive treatment
options. First, I tried PRP injections. You know that Kim Kardashian ‘Vampire Facial’, the one
you get your blood taken out of your body and then have it used as a face mask? PRP is pretty
much the same thing. They take your blood, spin it with this special machine and inject it back
into your scalp. I’ve heard from some people that this slowed their hair loss, but for me, nada. I
also tried Laser Cap Therapy. I purchased this $2000 red light cap which I wore on my head a
couple times per week. The red light is supposed to stimulate hair growth, but again, for me,
nada.
This journey of false hope took a serious toll on my mental health. I was so consumed by my
hair loss. I was constantly thinking about it. I removed all the downlights in my home because I
couldn’t bear to see my scalp under those lights. I skipped going out with my friends because
the pain of seeing them all with their thick, glamorous locks was too much for me. I would make
hair line contact before I made eye contact with anyone, I was constantly searching for
someone else going through what I was going through.
I spent a lot of time down the google rabbit hole researching cures. And one late-night, 3AM
research sesh led me to finding hair toppers. Oh. My. God. HALLELUJAH! I watched literally
hundreds of videos of women putting on these hair pieces. I couldn’t believe this solution
existed.
I bit the bullet and purchased my first ever topper. It was a tiny little piece that still hardly
covered my hair loss, but I LOVED it. I finally, after so many years, had a solution. Through
wearing hair, I also found the online hair loss community. This was HALLELUJAH x2. Suddenly,
I knew thousands of women going through the exact same thing as me. I was no longer alone.
At first, I LOVED the toppers I was wearing, but… over time I found they just weren’t quite right.
They were too bulky, looked fake, the clips were painful and the hair quality just wasn’t it. So, I
decided to take matters into my own hands…. A few years later, Lusta Hair was born!
Today we get to help women with hair loss from all over the world! With my right-hand gal,
Holly, who lost all her hair at 5 years old, we’re constantly working to make our products the
best ever! We get to chat with women all over the world, hear their stories and find the right hair
for them- there’s nothing more rewarding! I am so in love with the community we’ve created and
I’d love for you to come and find out more.
If you’re experiencing hair loss, just know, you are NEVER alone.
Lots of love, Kimberly xx
