I’m Jess, your wig wearing, champagne drinking, Bravo TV obsessed, side part and skinny jean wearing (they have never gone out of style in my opinion), telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia hair loss BFF.
Wearing a wig in the summer can feel like layering a cozy sweater onto your scalp… and nobody wants that when it’s 90 degrees out. But I promise, it is possible to enjoy sunshine, beach days, and backyard BBQs while rocking your favorite hair.
Over the years, I’ve learned a few tricks to make wig-wearing in the heat more comfortable, and I’m breaking them all down here. Whether you’re headed on vacation or just trying to survive a sweaty commute, these summer wig tips will help you feel cool, confident, and secure.
1. Choose a Breathable Cap Construction
Not all wigs are created equal, especially when it comes to airflow. Look for:
OpenWefted caps (aka open caps): These have strips of hair sewn onto breathable strips, which allow air to circulate.
Lightweight lace tops: Lace front or lace top wigs can feel less dense and more flexible on the scalp.
Hand-tied caps: If you want something premium, hand-tied wigs are known for being super lightweight and soft against the skin.
Hot tip: Avoid heavy or fully closed caps in the summer if you tend to overheat easily.
2. Use Wig Grips or Secure Hold Products That Won’t Slide
Sweat and adhesives are not always best friends. If you’re someone who feels extra secure using a wig grip or glue, here’s what works in hot temps:
Velvet or mesh wig grips: Velvet grips are great for no-slip hold, while grips with a mesh section provide more airflow.
Strong-hold, sweat-resistant adhesives: Use water- and sweat-proof glue or tape made for summer wear.
Skip the adhesive entirely if your wig has a snug fit and adjustable straps, let that scalp breathe.
3. Keep Your Wig Off Your Neck
Your neck is where heat tends to build up the most. These tweaks can make a huge difference:
Go for shorter styles: think bobs, lobs, or even a cute pixie.
Clip or braid your longer wig to keep it up and off your skin.
Use claw clips or scrunchies to create heatless updos without tension.
4. Consider a Summer-Only Wig
If you’re worried about sweating in your favorite luxury piece, consider getting a more affordable “summer wig” you don’t mind putting through a little extra wear and tear.
Some options I personally rotate in the summer:
Hat wigs for pool days or beach vacations (hello, The Hustle Wig 👋)
Synthetic wigs for super hot outings, they’re often lighter than human hair
Older wigs that have already been well-loved and are perfect for more active days
5. Protect Your Wig from Sun, Sweat, and Chlorine
Wigs, especially human hair, need just as much protection from UV damage as your skin does.
Wear a hat or scarf when in direct sun for long periods.
Use a UV protectant spray made for wigs (especially human hair).
Avoid chlorine at all costs, if you’re swimming, wear a swim cap or opt for a cheaper synthetic wig.
6. Don’t Forget Your Scalp
Yes, your scalp needs love too—especially in the summer.
Use scalp cleansing sprays between wears if you sweat a lot.
Wash your bio hair thoroughly and regularly.
Give yourself wig-free time whenever possible to let your scalp breathe.
Final Thoughts: You Can Absolutely Wig Through Summer
Summer can be hot, sticky, and full of outdoor plans—but that doesn’t mean you have to give up wearing hair. With the right hacks, breathable styles, and a bit of wig rotation, you can beat the heat and still feel your most confident self.
Because let’s be real—nothing should stop you from living your best life with the hair you love.
