If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be wearing wigs, and loving it, I would’ve raised a very skeptical eyebrow. Back then, hair loss felt like the end of my identity. I had no idea it was actually the beginning of something beautiful.
Whether you’re just starting to explore wigs or you’ve been lurking in the Google search bar wondering “Would I even look good in a wig?” this post is for you. I’m sharing what I wish I knew before wearing wigs, in hopes it makes your journey a little less scary and a lot more empowering.
1. It’s Okay to Grieve Your Bio Hair
No matter how thin, flat, frizzy, or frustrating your natural hair was, it was yours. Losing it can feel like losing a part of yourself, and that’s valid. It took me a long time to admit that hair loss was hard, even heartbreaking. But grieving doesn’t mean you’re not strong. It means you’re human.
2. There Is No “Bad Enough”
One of the biggest myths around wigs is that you have to wait until your hair loss reaches some invisible “point of no return” before you’re allowed to wear one. Nope. You don’t need to hit rock bottom or have a doctor’s note to justify doing something that helps you feel better. You don’t need to earn your way into wigs. If wearing hair helps you feel more like you, that’s reason enough.
3. Wigs Aren’t What They Used to Be
Gone are the days of shiny Halloween wigs and heavy helmet hair. Today’s pieces are beautiful, lightweight, realistic, and endlessly wearable. Once I found the right wig, I went from feeling like I had something to hide to feeling like I had a secret superpower.
4. You Will Feel Awkward at First, and That’s Normal
Putting on a wig for the first time can feel weird. It’s like wearing a new pair of jeans that aren’t broken in yet. But that discomfort doesn’t last. One day, you’ll catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and think, Damn, I look good. And you won’t even remember that you’re wearing hair.
5. It Can Actually Be… Fun?!
I never expected to love wigs. But now? I get to choose my color, length, and style based on my mood. I can wear long waves on Monday and a sleek bob on Thursday. And bad hair days? Basically extinct.
6. This Journey Will Introduce You to Your Strongest Self
I used to think my confidence came from my bio hair. But what I’ve learned is this: the strength was always mine. Wigs didn’t give it to me, they just helped me see it more clearly.
Final Thoughts
If you’re on the edge of taking that first step, trying your first wig, joining a support group, or even just saying out loud, “I’m struggling with hair loss,” know that you are not alone.
You’re not vain. You’re not overreacting. You’re not giving up.
You’re just finding a new way forward. And I promise, it’s a beautiful one.
xx,
Jess
