I’m Jess, your wig wearing, champagne drinking, Bravo TV obsessed, side part and skinny jean wearing (they have never gone out of style in my opinion), telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia hair loss BFF.
I wish there were a simple answer to this question, but the truth is, it’s different for everyone. Getting used to wearing a wig isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey. For some, it clicks right away. For others, it takes time. And both are totally normal.
What I can tell you is this: it gets better. Easier. More natural. And one day, you’ll look in the mirror and see you, not just someone wearing a wig.
Let’s break it down because there are two very different parts to getting used to wigs:
➡️ the physical adjustment
➡️ the emotional journey
Physically getting used to a wig is mostly about fit and comfort. If your wig fits properly, it shouldn’t feel tight, itchy, or like it’s going to fall off every time you blink. You should be able to move, live, and breathe in your wig without constantly thinking about it.
Here’s what helps:
Truthfully, you can feel physically comfortable in a wig within a few wears, sometimes even on day one if the fit is right. It might take a little trial and error (we’ve all had the too-tight, too-hot, what-even-is-this-hairline moments), but the right wig will feel like second skin.
This is where most of us really need time. Because let’s be honest, wearing a wig is vulnerable. Whether you’ve lost your hair to a medical condition, genetics, or stress, it’s a change. A big one. And the world doesn’t exactly teach us how to navigate it.
At first, you might feel like everyone knows. You might be hyper-aware of the lace, the hairline, or the volume. You might be afraid someone will say something or notice something. That’s so normal. You’re not alone in that feeling.
But something beautiful happens when you give yourself space and grace to grow into it.
You look back one day and realize:
That’s the real magic. And it can take weeks, or even months, but it happens. I promise.
✨ Practice wearing your wig at home before going out
✨ Play with styles you love, confidence grows when you feel you
✨ Start with safe spaces: lunch with a friend, a quick store run, a walk
✨ Remind yourself: you’re allowed to take up space just as you are
Getting used to wearing a wig is both a physical and emotional journey. One is about finding the right fit. The other is about finding your footing. But both lead to the same place: freedom. The freedom to show up fully as yourself, no matter what’s on your head.
So if you’re new to this, or still adjusting, or just need a little reminder, you’re doing great. And the confidence? It’s coming. One step, one wig day, one deep breath at a time.
You’ve got this. 💛
Let me know in the comments, how long did it take you to get used to your wig? Or if you’re still figuring it out, what’s been the hardest part? Let’s support each other. Always.
xx,
Jess
