I’m Jess, your wig wearing, champagne drinking, Bravo TV obsessed, side part and skinny jean wearing (they have never gone out of style in my opinion), telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia hair loss BFF.
If you’ve ever gone down the rabbit hole of hair loss treatments, you know the list of “miracle cures” is endless, and sometimes laughable. From onion juice rinses to magical shampoos promising to give you a full wig of hair overnight (spoiler: they don’t), I’ve seen it all.
As someone who has lived with hair loss for years, I’ve personally tried a mix of medical treatments, over-the-counter products, and professional recommendations. Some gave me hope, some gave me side effects, and some gave me nothing but a lighter wallet.
This post is not medical advice, just me sharing what I’ve tried for hair loss and how I approach it now. Because the truth is, it’s a personal decision whether or not you want to treat hair loss. And your choices can change over time, just like mine have.
I once saw a trichologist who recommended red light therapy treatments , every other week at his salon, of course. Later, I found my own at-home option, the CurrentBody Red Light Scalp Treatment, which I still use today. Does it magically sprout new hair overnight? No. But I like the ritual, and it makes me feel like I’m investing in my scalp health.
Raise your hand if you’ve been told to take biotin for hair growth 🙋🏻♀️. I’ve taken high doses, as recommended, but didn’t see much of a difference in actual regrowth. These days, I focus more on overall wellness. I currently take the Vegamour supplements, not a miracle pill, but they support my scalp and hair health.
I briefly tried spironolactone, a common prescription for women with hair loss. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel well on it, so I stopped. Another reminder that what works for one person doesn’t always work for another.
I’ve done both. Topical minoxidil gave me minimal results, but nothing life-changing. When I switched to oral minoxidil, I did see some regrowth, but the side effects weren’t worth it for me. Think water weight gain and hair growing everywhere (not just on my head). A reminder that results vary and side effects are real.
Can we talk about the more ridiculous “hair loss cures”?
And don’t even get me started on the scam ads that steal my videos to claim their magic brush or shampoo cured my hair loss. (For the record: it’s just me before and after putting on my wig!)
These days, I go through phases. Sometimes I want to try treatments, sometimes I step back. Right now, my focus is on:
And of course, my wigs, which remain my favorite solution when I want instant confidence, no side effects included.
The truth is, deciding whether or not to treat your hair loss is personal. I’ve been through phases of trying everything, and phases of trying nothing. Right now, I’m in the middle: focusing on scalp health while also embracing wigs as a solution I truly love.
So whether you’re slathering rosemary oil on your scalp, investing in red light therapy, or simply saying, “I’m good with my wigs, thanks,” your path is valid.
Remember: beauty is never defined by your hair.
Cheering you on always,
Jess xx
