I’m Jess, your wig wearing, champagne drinking, Bravo TV obsessed, side part and skinny jean wearing (they have never gone out of style in my opinion), telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia hair loss BFF.
From Self-Conscious to Self-Assured
There was a time when I thought hair loss would define me. I felt like I had lost more than just strands—I had lost a piece of myself. And if you’re reading this, maybe you’ve felt that too.
But today, I can say this with full confidence: Wearing a wig didn’t just restore my hair—it restored my power.
My Hair Loss Journey (And Why I’m Sharing It)
Hair loss showed up in my life uninvited, slowly eroding the confidence I once had in the mirror. I tried all the treatments. Googled all the solutions. Felt every emotion—shame, frustration, grief.
Eventually, I stopped asking “Why is this happening to me?” and started asking, “How can I take back control?”
For me, the answer was wigs.
Wig Wearing Isn’t Just About Hair—It’s About Healing
What surprised me most wasn’t just how I looked in a wig, but how I felt. I stood a little taller. Smiled more easily. Took pictures again. Said yes to social plans without overthinking my hair.
The first time I wore a wig out in public, it was for my husband’s birthday dinner. Just the two of us—felt like a safe place to start. But of course, that night took a turn when friends unexpectedly invited us over. My stomach dropped. I almost said no. But I didn’t. I showed up—wig and all.
And guess what? No one noticed. Or if they did, they didn’t say a word.
It was the night I realized I could live my life again.
Rebuilding Confidence One Wig at a Time
If you’re just starting out on your wig journey, know this: it gets easier. What once felt like a costume starts to feel like you.
Here are a few things that helped me grow my confidence while wearing wigs:
Start small — Wear it around the house or during solo errands
Get the fit right — Confidence starts with comfort
Take photos — Seeing yourself through a different lens helps
Lean on community — Follow others (like me!) who are walking the same path
You’re Not Alone—And You’re Not Less Than
Hair loss doesn’t make you less feminine, less powerful, or less beautiful. It just makes you human. And finding a solution that helps you feel more you—whether that’s a wig, topper, or bold baldness—is something to be proud of.
If you’re on the fence about wigs, I hope my story shows you what’s possible.
